Training – Week one.

So I am in training. I need to build up stamina in riding, running and swimming. I figure to initially focus on running and swimming and hope that that will automatically lead to an increase in Stamina to my riding. Plus they are the harder sports.

What am I in training for? Well, first and foremost the 2010 London Marathon. But before that I have the Great South Run in October 2009. I’m also going to be swimming half a mile and riding the London to Brighton Bike ride (without stopping, even for Ditchling Beacon) in 2010.

Why? Because I want to raise some money for a good cause – the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA). Also, because I need to loose a few kilos before I develop a heart condition myself!

Anyway – this blog is to keep you all up-to-date with my training. So what training am I doing?

Running

My standard training run is around my block – I’ll down load a map of the route later and provide a link – its a 1.5 miles (2.4km) run that has both up and down gradients. I’ve done this route a few times and whilst not being pretty, it has convenience on its side.

My first run of it this year took me 13 minutes 56 seconds. My average heart rate was during the run was 168 Beats a minute (BPM). I maxed out at 184 BPM. Over the coming weeks I’ll be tracking my weight, heart rate and speed over this course to show (hopefully) improvement. At the moment I’m not 100% sure on the format I’ll use to show this info but I’m sure I’ll come up with something.

Swimming

I’m swimming at the Kingston’s Esporta gym under the expert guidance of Kate and Lorraine. I’ve never learnt to swim properly – I could splash around and get from one end of the pool to the other a few times (or so I thought) but I had never learned the whole ‘head under water, no splashy splashy’ way of doing things. So, that is what I am now learning. I can currently swim 4 lengths without stopping, and about 20 lengths over an hours with lots of breaks to catch my breath. My aim is to be able to swim half a mile (800 meters, 32 lengths) without stopping.

So – that’s the plan. Monday is swimming night – Tuesdays is running. I’ll endeavour to update this blog after each event with an update on distance, time and heart rates where I can.

If you are interested and notice I don’t update this – please give me a prod – I really need your help and support to keep going. I’m also looking out for the occasionally guest swimming or running partner so if you fancy it – let me know.

That’s all for now folks.

Cheers

Steve
